Description
MEJIRO
Mejiro, meaning white-eye, is a native Japanese bird. It is a small bird, around 4 inches in length. This bird is primarily green with a yellow throat and a white front. In addition, it has a small and narrow beak to feed on nectar and insects.
The mejiro is a social bird that enjoys flocking with other species, except when it is mating season. These small green birds build a nest each season to lay eggs and raise their chicks. Nests are often built using materials stolen from those friends the mejiro have been flocking with. Sometimes they will reuse the nest up to 3 times during the season.
The mejiro is a common species found across East Asia. In 1929, this green bird was introduced to Hawai’i and it’s population has expanded to all main islands. Unfortunately, the mejiro competes with native Hawaiian birds. Many native Hawaiian birds also feed on nectar and insects. Consequently, this bird’s presence in Hawai’i makes it much more difficult for the native Hawaiian birds to survive.
