Bird Companion

My first cockatiel captured my heart and changed my life.  His name was Leo the Cockatiel.  He had orange cheeks and a bright yellow crest that was fascinating to watch as it went up and down.  I later learned that his crest indicated his emotions.  And boy, did he have a lot of them.  Everyday he would wake me up with his creative tunes and he would bow his head and beg for scritches, which was my favorite task.  Leo melted my heart with his heart-shaped courting wings and his relaxed company when I was working on the computer.  Although he would also sometimes crawl down my arm and remove keys from the keyboard.

Today, Kirby and Sully, a pair of cockatiels, own me.  Kirby is the sweetest bird because he never bites.  At least he never bites hard, it’s more like a gentle reminder.  Kirby is also the smart one.  He picked up the few bird tricks that I have attempted to teach very quickly.  Kirby can wave, shake his head, put up his wings, turn around in circles, and pick up coins and put them in a box or bowl.  He will also fly to his cage when he’s told to go home.

Sully was hand-raised and started off sweet.  But after he matured, he revealed that he can bite really hard.  The first time Sully bit hard enough to draw blood, I was shocked. I never imagined that a cockatiel could bite so hard.  However, Sully still has his kind moments.  When Sully wants a head scratch he will bow his head and demand scritches.  He is also the first to beg for any kind of food.  And Sully can amazingly gnaw every last thing in the cage to dust.

These two birds brighten my life every day.  I can watch them preen for hours.  Do you have a feathered friend?  Share your story by emailing tweet@feathersforyou.com.

Birdwatcher

After enjoying avian companions, I have also discovered the fascination of birds in the wild.  My husband jokes that there are more photos of birds than people from our family adventures.  And that’s probably true!  Not to mention that I always plan a bird watching portion of every trip.

Since I love my bird companions, I have always hoped to visit Australia to see cockatiels in the wild.  With that desire, I have realized that bird conservation is very important to me.  Birds always catch my eye when I am outdoors.  This year I joined a local group, Hui Manu-o-Ku.  We collect nest observations of the native Hawaiian fairy white tern every week.  This threatened bird is most frequently found in the uninhabited Northern Hawaiian islands.  A small population has become established in Honolulu, and it has quickly become known as an urban seabird that thrives in the city.

During every excursion I learn to identify the subtle differences in species.  The diversity that surrounds me is amazing.  Share stories about your big year by emailing tweet@feathersforyou.com.
